Established is 1886, by Shri Girish Chandra Das Gupta, Das Gupta & Company Private Limited is a landmark in the book district of Kolkata, College Street. A heritage bookshop for over 125 years, Das Gupta continues to live up to the founder's noble ideal of "the spreading of knowledge". 

​The shop started operations with 50 books only. The address of the shop was 64, College Street. Presidency College, Hindu School, Hare School,etc were its famous neighbours. 

​In 1902, Das Gupta shifted a little eastward, towards the junction of College Street and Mahatma Gandhi Road. The new address was 54/3 College Street. A new proprietor, Kshitish Chandra Das Gupta (son of Girish Chandra Das Gupta), started his career at this new location with fresh enthusiasm and vigor. He could not keep himself content only with sales and moved ahead to search for new markets for his book trade. Soon, Das Gupta & Company was recognized as the leading supplier of books to the Government organizations, schools, libraries and several other institutions. 

​Amulya Chandra Das Gupta (eldest son of Kshitish Chandra Das Gupta) joined the institution in 1929 and was at the helm till 1990. Bijan Chandra Das Gupta (second son of Kshitish Chandra) joined Das Gupta & Company in 1931.

Ranjan Das Gupta (second son of Amulya Chandra Das Gupta) & Arabinda Das Gupta (youngest son of Amulya Chandra Das Gupta) are now at the helm of affairs - having been part of Das Gupta for over 40 years now.
